Homemade Dune Buggy (2015)

Project Summary

After crashing and rolling my Off-road Go-kart in 2014, I began designing my next creation. I decided this next project would be bigger, more powerful, and fully off-road capable. I wanted double wishbone independent front suspension and better rear swing-arm suspension (independent rear suspension would have been too expensive).  With funding from both my family and my own pocket, I began purchasing materials (different sizes of square tubing) for the roll cage (as well as recycling some the the roll cage from my previous project) and also ordering some parts online such as the steering rack, seat, shocks etc. I bought a 15 hp Honda clone engine from Princess Auto, and ordered a CVT (constant variable transmission) for more torque on rough terrain. Next I began jigging and welding the frame and roll cage as well as suspension components. I got some big, knobby wheels from a friend and the whole thing started to come together. The next thing it needed was an awesome paint job... I decided to go with Subaru world rally blue with champagne mist gold accents and black rims. After that I rewired the electric start to be beside the steering wheel, bough a bike speedometer, and installed some lights. It was absolutely beautiful, and very fun to drive. The suspension was very well balanced (from front to rear) and the dune buggy drove very well, capable of speeds over 60 km/h, the steering radius however wasn't great (because of the long wheelbase and solid, live drive axle), but overall it performed admirably off-road. I worked on this project after school through the school year, while juggling a grade 12 course load and playing  for two rugby teams.
